X Agent, also called XAgent, is a very smart spyware and malware program. It gathers and sends stolen files from devices like Windows, Linux, iOS, or Android to places controlled by hackers. This malware is connected to a hacker group named Fancy Bear, which is linked to Russian Military Intelligence (GRU).

Use Cases

X Agent has been used in different cyber spying efforts. It was first seen in 2015 targeting iOS devices in an effort called Operation Pawn Storm. This effort aimed at military groups, governments, defense companies, and the media. In 2016, an Android version of X Agent was used to target the Ukrainian military. This version was hidden in a real Android app used to control artillery, letting the hackers gather important tactical data.

In 2017, a version of X Agent for Mac, called XAgentOSX, was found. This version was used in targeted and politically motivated attacks. It could steal iPhone backups, collect hardware and software information, and even take screenshots.

The Slovak computer security company ESET looked at X Agent''s source code and shared details about how it works. Also, a grand jury in Washington, DC, linked X Agent to the hacking of the DCCC and DNC networks in 2016.
