The Guardian View on AI and Copyright: Creativity Should Be Cherished, Not Given Away
The UK government's consultation on AI and copyright law has been criticized for being weighted towards big tech companies. The proposal to grant bots free rein and provide an incentive for tech companies to invest in the UK was not taken up, but it was not killed off either. The current government's consultation on AI and copyright law is framed in terms that are far too favourable to big tech.
The law is very clear: the makers of works of art and other products of human creativity have for centuries been entitled to protection from copyists. However, big tech companies have absorbed a vast amount of material that they ought to have been obliged to pay for. There are parallels with the way that US social media companies built advertising-funded businesses that were heavily reliant on content, including news, that was paid for by others.
Artists, including Paul McCartney and others, have stepped up to make the case against big tech anti-regulation and in favour of the continued protection of creativity. In the House of Lords, an amendment to the government's data bill, asserting that licences to copyrighted material must be actively sought rather than taken for granted, was accepted.
Ministers who have had their heads turned by the promise of new data centres and a seat at the AI table should reconsider their priorities and obligations.

Voyage AI Sold for $220 Million
Voyage AI, a year-and-a-half-old company, has been sold to MongoDB for $220 million. The company creates technology for safeguarding against generative AI hallucinations that can result when models don’t sufficiently “understand” the data or information they are referencing. The acquisition is a rapid exit and a hefty payday for the young company, but experts say it isn’t unexpected given the pace of innovation in AI.
Not Everyone is Keen on Artificial Intelligence
Not everyone is keen on artificial intelligence. Here's why some businesses are skeptical. When a California doctor asked state Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan to sign a form allowing AI to transcribe her child's medical visit, she refused. Her concern? Intimate medical conversations are being shared with for-profit tech companies, according to an October 2024 report.
Health care providers are concerned about AI "hallucinating" medical information, small businesses lack resources for AI implementation, and creative industries are fighting copyright infringement. Hesitations often run deeper than technical challenges. "The real barrier here is that companies realize that there needs to be an actual cultural change within the company, and they need to ask very concrete and very rigorous questions," Kimon Drakopoulos, director of the AI for business degree program at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business, told Stacker.
